Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy today provided an update on the county’s efforts to administer the COVID vaccine and control the spread of the virus. The most recent data shows that 34.6% of Albany County’s population has received at least their first dose, and 17.9% has been fully vaccinated, compared to the State’s first dose rate of 27.5%.

County Executive McCoy announced today that the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Albany County has now climbed to 21,999 to date, an increase of 88 new positive cases since yesterday. The five-day average for new daily positives has increased to 61.6 from 58.2. Please note that our overall case count will fluctuate as CommCare records are transferred in and out of the county.

Among the new cases of Coronavirus, 25 had close contact with positive cases, 62 did not have clear sources of infection at this time, one reported traveling out of state, and none are healthcare workers or residents of a congregate settings. There are now 516 active cases in the county, up from 506 yesterday. The number of people under mandatory quarantine increased to 1,298 from 1,276. So far, 69,930 people have completed quarantine. Of those who completed quarantine, 21,483 of them had tested positive and recovered. That is an increase of 75 recoveries since yesterday.

There were six new hospitalizations overnight, and there are now 34 county residents hospitalized from the virus – a net increase of five. There are currently four patients in ICU’s, up from three yesterday. There are no new COVID-related deaths to report, and the death toll for Albany County still stands at 365 since the outbreak began.

“New COVID infections are up and there was a net increase of 5 hospitalizations since yesterday. The latest numbers are concerning and are a sad reminder that we are not out of the woods yet, and we need to continue to protect ourselves from this deadly disease. In order to better identify where and how the virus is spreading, we need people to continue getting tested, and we still need people to wear masks and socially distance,” said County Executive McCoy.

“Ultimately, the best protection from COVID is getting vaccinated. We were able to administer 1,007 first doses and 1,093 second doses at our Albany Capital Center clinic yesterday. We’re encouraging people to use our vaccine pre-registration tool, which is being used to make appointments for our clinic in Arbor Hill tomorrow that we are partnering on with Mohawk Ambulance. As it becomes harder and harder to find those who are eligible to fill appointments, we need the State to expand eligibility,” he continued. 

Tomorrow’s vaccination point of dispensing (POD) will be located at the Arbor Hill Public Library, 148 Henry Johnson Blvd, Albany, NY 12210, between 9am and 3pm. Those who are eligible match the eligibility requirements developed by the State and include those who are at least 50 years old, those with the listed co-morbidities, and 1A and 1B essential workers. Residents are encouraged to pre-register for vaccines, whether they are eligible or not, in advance of any new expansions of eligibility in the future.

Due to the previously scheduled NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Regionals at the Times Union Center, some of the COVID-19 second vaccine doses scheduled for this week next week at the Times Union Center are being moved to the Albany Capital Center. Those with appointments on Saturday, March 27; and Monday, March 29 will now be receiving their vaccination at the Capital Center at 55 Eagle St, Albany, NY 12207.

On Monday, County Executive McCoy announced a county-wide reusable bag art contest to encourage the public to reduce our reliance on disposable paper bags and protect the environment. Students in grades three through five from schools throughout the county are invited to submit their own design illustrations with corresponding slogans that raise awareness for this issue by April 9. 

School districts interested in participating in Albany County’s design competition should contact the County Executive’s Office by March 29. All submissions should be sent to AlbanyCountyKidsCare@AlbanyCountyNY.gov. The winners of the contest will be announced on Earth Day, April 22, and the winning submission will be printed on reusable bags and distributed by Albany County to community partners.

Walmart pharmacy locations in Albany on Washington Avenue Extension and in Glenmont on Route 9W are offering vaccination appointments. Other locations are in Troy, Schenectady and Amsterdam. Eligible populations include the 60+ population, educators, and staff of licensed childcare providers. Community-wide free testing continues on the University at Albany (SUNY) campus by appointment only for those with or without symptoms. Appointments may be made by calling the NYS hotline at 888-364-3065 or by visiting the State Department of Health website.
 
County Executive McCoy continues to highlight the testing site in Albany County at Priority 1 Urgent Care, which also provides antibody testing, located in Hamilton Square at 2080 Western Avenue in Guilderland. Testing will only be provided after appointments are made and after patients come in to be screened for expanded CDC symptoms. To schedule an appointment, you can call (518) 867-8040.
 
The County Executive also encourages those who are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms to register for the drive-thru community testing site at Rite Aid, 1863 Central Avenue in Colonie. Testing is free for those who are eligible based on CDC guidelines and are at least 18 years old. It’s available between 9am and 5pm, seven days a week by appointment only. Registration is available at their website at the link here. Tests will be conducted from within an individual’s car with self-swab nasal tests and with the help of a pharmacist.
 
Walgreens is operating a testing facility at the 41 Holland Avenue location utilizing a self-collection model. Residents will be able to remain in their cars while assisted by pharmacists when necessary. Based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, individuals who are 18 years or older may be tested once completing an eligibility assessment at the Walgreens website or at their app. Patients can get their results from PWNHealth.
 
Price Chopper/Market 32 is piloting a free COVID-19 test program at three of its New York drive-thru pharmacies. Customers can register for a test at the website here and they will get a voucher to go to one of the testing sites on a specific date. Local participating pharmacies are in Latham, Clifton Park and Johnstown. Testing is on Tuesdays from 7am to 9am. Customers won’t leave their car and will administer the test themselves with guidance from a pharmacist. Results will be provided by eTrueNorth.
 
CVS is offering drive-thru testing at select stores. You must register online for an appointment. To do that and find locations offering the drive-thru testing, go to the CVS website.
 
Central Med Urgent Care, 1662 Central Avenue, Colonie offers the rapid antigen test, lab-based PCR and antibody testing. No appointment is required but you can call 518-240-1456 if you would like to make an appointment. Testing is available for children.
