Holds Briefing & Warns of Increasing Infection Rates amid Religious Holidays; Calls on State to Expand Vaccine Eligibility to all New York Adults
Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy today provided an update on the county’s efforts to administer the COVID vaccine and control the spread of the virus. The most recent data shows that 36.1% of Albany County’s population has received at least their first dose, and 20.3% has been fully vaccinated, compared to the State’s first dose rate of 29.2%. To date, Albany County has administered or reallocated 32,521 first and second doses (and this includes the Johnson & Johnson single shots).
County Executive McCoy announced that the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Albany County has now climbed to 22,206 to date, an increase of 61 new positive cases since yesterday. The five-day average for new daily positives has increased slightly to 73.6 from 73.4. Please note that our overall case count will fluctuate as CommCare records are transferred in and out of the county.
Among the new cases of Coronavirus, 24 had close contact with positive cases, 33 did not have clear sources of infection at this time, three reported traveling out of state, and one is a healthcare worker or resident of a congregate setting. There are now 567 active cases in the county, up from 555 yesterday. The number of people under mandatory quarantine decreased to 1,392 from 1,400. So far, 70,549 people have completed quarantine. Of those who completed quarantine, 21,639 of them had tested positive and recovered. That is an increase of 45 recoveries since yesterday.
There were two new hospitalizations overnight, and 28 county residents remain hospitalized from the virus – unchanged since Sunday. There are currently two patients in ICU’s, up from one yesterday. There are no new COVID-related deaths to report and the death toll for Albany County stands at 366 since the outbreak began. For the briefing, the County Executive was joined by County Health Commissioner Dr. Elizabeth Whalen.
“Albany County’s seven-day average for percent positive rates has increased to 2.3% from 1.8% just ten days ago, and we’re seeing infection rates spiking downstate, in New Jersey, in Vermont and other areas across the country. At the same time, it’s becoming more and more difficult to fill vaccine appointments with individuals who are eligible, which is why now is the time to expand eligibility to every adult who wants a shot,” said County Executive McCoy.
“One of the resources that is making filling vaccination appointments easier is our pre-registration tool. With the help of Mohawk Ambulance and Alliance for Better Health, we were able to get 635 shots in arms at the Arbor Hill Public Library on Saturday. This is another step towards getting to herd immunity and vaccine equity. We continue to encourage everyone to pre-register, whether they are eligible now or not, so we can act quickly when eligibility is expanded,” he continued.
