Albany County Legislature considers a new ‘living wage’ for County workforce

Legislation would seek to raise wages to $15 an hour for non-elected employees
As part of its continuing efforts to ensure economic justice, the Albany County Legislature is leading by example and has introduced legislation that aims to establish a living wage for the County workforce. The measure would allow pay increases for over 60 County employees.
After seeing the effects the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the economy, the Legislature has determined that $15 an hour is a more sufficient wage to support a basic standard of living rather than the State’s minimum wage of $12.50.
In addition, the Legislature is hopeful that increasing wages will begin to address the wealth gap, especially among minorities and women, who have been marginalized from fair and equal wages for decades.
“The Democratic Women’s Caucus put this proposal up as we support $15 per hour as a living wage in Albany County. Unfortunately we can’t speed up or change the entire County, but we can positively affect the 63 people our payroll, who do not earn a living wage. These essential workers need an essential pay rate,” said Deputy Majority Leader Lynne Lekakis, who introduced the measure.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the incredible service and work ethic of Albany County’s frontline workers,” said Chairman Andrew Joyce. “These are the individuals who are the true definition of essential employees. Now is the time we get them a living wage to support themselves and their families.”
The resolution, if approved, would cost the County approximately $70,000 and would require an amendment to the 2021 budget.
The resolution is being referred to the Audit and Finance and Personnel Committees for further review.
