Post Date:05/24/2021 12:39 pm

Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy held a briefing today to report on the county’s progress on administering and distributing COVID vaccines and controlling the spread of the Coronavirus. As of yesterday, 60.6% of Albany County’s population has received at least the first dose, and 52.7% has been fully vaccinated. The first dose vaccination rate for the county’s 18+ population is now up to 71.5%. That compares to the statewide first dose vaccination rate of 51.9%, and full vaccination rate of 43.9%. More information on vaccination rates can be found at the New York State COVID-19 Vaccine Tracker at the link here

County Executive McCoy announced that the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Albany County has now climbed to 24,269 to date, an increase of 17 new positive cases since yesterday. The five-day average for new daily positives remained at 17.6. Please note that our overall case count will fluctuate as CommCare records are transferred in and out of the county. Albany County’s most recent seven-day average of percent positive rates is still 1.0%, and the Capital Region’s rate is still 1.1%.

Among the new cases of Coronavirus, five had close contact with positive cases, 12 did not have clear sources of infection at this time, and none are healthcare workers or residents of congregate living settings. There are now 105 active cases in the county, down from 106 yesterday. The number of people under mandatory quarantine increased to 306 from 298. So far, 79,201 people have completed quarantine. Of those who completed quarantine, 24,164 of them had tested positive and recovered. That is an increase of 19 recoveries since yesterday.

The County Executive reported that there were no new hospitalizations overnight, and ten county residents remain hospitalized from the virus. There are still four patients in ICU’s. There are no new deaths to report and the death toll for Albany County still stands at 379 since the outbreak began.

For the briefing, County Executive McCoy was joined by County Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Elizabeth Whalen and President George Manias of the Albany FireWolves, a National Lacrosse League team, to announce a new incentive for getting vaccinated.

“On Friday we announced there will be free Albany Empire tickets available for those who get vaccinated at the Vax Block Party at the Times Union Center on May 29. But we want to build on that momentum, and today we announced that the first 1,000 residents between the ages of 12 and 15 who get vaccinated at one of our POD’s will get a free ticket to an Albany FireWolves game for their upcoming season starting in December,” said County Executive McCoy. “These creative incentives are helping us convince those still on the fence, and ultimately will allow us to reach herd immunity. I want to thank President Manias for being a part of this important effort.”

“The Albany FireWolves and the FireWolves Foundation are true to our word and are here to help our community through our Pack Gives Back initiatives.  Nothing is more important right now than our community coming together to beat this pandemic and we want to do our part to help.  The children are the future of this community and we are proud to offer an incentive to help motivate families to have their kids, ages 12-15, get vaccinated so we can insure a healthy future for the Capital Region. Hopefully, we can help get those vaccinated who may either be on the fence or may have otherwise not intended to do so,” said George Manias, President of the Albany FireWolves.
