County Executive McCoy Provides an Update on COVID-19 in Albany County
Post Date:04/02/2020 2:40 pm
In case you missed it:
As Albany County enters its fourth week of the COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) outbreak, County Executive Daniel P. McCoy announced today that there are now 238 confirmed positive cases. Additionally, there are now 401 people under mandatory quarantine and 202 people under precautionary quarantine. County Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Elizabeth Whalen joined him in making the announcement. With 27 individuals now hospitalized, the hospitalization rate for the county stands at just over 11.3%. Twelve adults are now in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
“As we work around the clock to mitigate the effects of this pandemic, I’m overwhelmed by the amount of support and compassion we’ve seen from the community, and that includes our school districts and Capital Region businesses,” said County Executive McCoy. “Today we received six boxes of personal protective equipment from the South Colonie School District. We’ve also seen Regeneron commit to donating 500,000 test kit materials to the State and Ford Motor Company making over 200,000 face shields for the hardest hit states in the country, including New York, with shipments to be delivered to Albany Med, St. Peter’s Hospital and Albany Memorial Hospital.”
The County Executive also highlighted two important and time sensitive pieces of the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act aimed at protecting nonprofits and small businesses. The Paycheck Protection Program is $349 billion worth of loans for organizations with fewer than 500 workers to cover payroll, rent and other qualifying costs. The loans can become grants if staff is kept on the payroll during the loan period. The other, the Small Business Administration Injury Disaster Loans Program, offers up to $2 million in assistance to nonprofits to help overcome temporary losses of revenue during the pandemic. For those who are dealing with stress, anxiety and even depression while confined to their homes during the pandemic, the Albany County Mental Health Support Line is available seven days a week from 8am to 5pm at (518) 269-6634. Anyone experiencing a psychiatric emergency should still call the Albany County Mobile Crisis Team at (518) 549–6500.
While families and residents are home, Albany County departments are also producing short videos to help parents and kids pass the time with everything from arts and crafts and reading to karate. Other videos include mental health tips on coping and exercise videos. The first videos are up and more will be added over time. You can see them on our AlbanyCountyCares YouTube channel, which may be accessed through our website here: http://www.albanycounty.com/covid-19/resources
With visitation being placed on hold at Shaker Place Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, children and families are being asked to send messages or pictures to older residents there. This can also help with social isolation and mental health issues. E-cards can be sent to AlbanyCountyKidsCare@albanycountyny.gov.
For all COVID-19 questions and concerns, residents are encouraged to use United Way’s 2-1-1 hotline as well as the State Department of Health’s hot line at 888-364-3065.
