In an effort to improve neighborhood safety and strengthen law enforcement's ability to investigate and prosecute crimes, the Albany County Legislature is partnering with the Albany County Sheriff's to establish an Albany County SafeCam Program.
The program would allow residents to register their privately-owned security cameras with the Albany County Sheriff's Office. If a crime occurs in the vicinity of that registrant's security camera, law enforcement will contact the individual to obtain video surveillance footage to assist in the investigation of that crime.
"In light of all the incessant acts of gun violence on our streets, it is incumbent upon us, as representatives of the people, to take action. Our children should not be scared to walk on our streets, nor mothers afraid to even step out the door. The Albany SafeCam program will serve as a deterrent to gun violence. This should send a very strong message that we are intentional about fighting crime in Albany. We all have a right to safe streets and that we must protect," said Legislator Beroro Efekoro, a co-sponsor of the resolution introduced Monday night.
"The Albany County Safe Cam program will empower residents to play an active role in making their communities safer, said Legislator Sam Fein. "By voluntarily registering their home cameras with the Albany County Sheriff, residents will have the ability to share footage with local law enforcement to help solve crimes. This is a modern solution that fosters community vigilance and cooperation, enhancing public safety through technology."
The legislation is being referred to Law and Public Safety Committees for further discussion.
