Statement from County Executive McCoy on Governor Hochul’s State of the State Address

Post Date:01/09/2024 4:03 pm

“The new initiatives detailed in the Governor’s State of the State address today show a commitment to tackling the affordability issues that have been affecting the hardworking residents who call New York State home. Improved access to housing through new construction and reform as well as increased wages promises to strengthen economic stability.

Combined with her proposed consumer protections, investments in education as well as public swimming facilities, expanded access to high-quality prenatal care, and enhanced public safety, this comprehensive plan aims to address many of the critical needs of our region. Public Health and safety are fundamental principles of our liberty. That’s why all efforts to crack down on crime while assisting businesses are welcome.

Fostering mental health policy is essential to promote access to care and reduce stigma so those who need it seek help. This is especially key for our students who are dealing with the new challenges posed by social media. Cyberbullying, comparison anxiety, and excessive screen time all have an adverse impact on self-confidence and mental health. That’s why Albany County has already been working with school districts to implement programs that help both students and educators identify and address negative behavior and attitudes that impact mental health. I applaud Governor Hochul’s plan to help further promote a supportive environment that supports mental wellness.

The Governor’s Empire AI program gives our institutions the tools they need to harness this technology’s full potential. When used responsibly, AI is a tool that can enhance data-driven decision-making and could streamline public services. By embracing the future and harnessing innovation, we pave the way for a smarter, more responsive government.

It is vital that we continue to pave the way for progress, and work tirelessly to enhance accessibility and opportunity for everyone. These forward-thinking policies demonstrate an innovative approach to the evolving needs of our communities. While there is still more work that needs to be done, I believe these programs are a strong step in the right direction.

Albany County will continue to partner with Governor Hochul and our state leaders as we continue to build on the legacy of resiliency that defines the Empire State.”
