Albany County Awarded Over $1.8 Million through NY SWIMS Initiative
Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy is happy to announce that New York State has awarded Albany County a grant totaling $1,856,000 to provide no to low-cost swimming programs for the general public.
“This is a long-term investment in the health, safety, and well-being of our community,” said Albany County Executive Daniel P McCoy. “Swimming is a life skill, and access to a public pool ensures that everyone in our community, regardless of their economic status, has the opportunity to learn and enjoy this essential activity. I thank Governor Hochul for her continued efforts to improve public health and safety through this innovative program and thank you to Assemblyman John McDonald for his support.”
The New York Statewide Investment in More Swimming (NY SWIMS) initiative aims to help municipalities design, construct, and modernize public swimming facilities in order to increase access to safe swimming and outdoor recreation opportunities. This grant will help Albany County to re-open the Cohoes Aquatic Center, increasing programming for our children, elders, at-risk community members, and the general public.
Albany County also recently filed a joint application for the NY SWIMS Lifeguard Grant Program with the City of Cohoes, Town of Bethlehem, City of Watervliet, Town of Colonie, and the Village of Altamont. The Albany County Parks and Recreation Lifeguard Certification Program, in close collaboration with local governments, provides American Red Cross certification, recertification, and CPR courses. By building a strong team of qualified lifeguards, we can create a safer environment and enhance the aquatic experience for Albany County residents.
