Statement from County Executive McCoy on Governor Hochul’s State of the State Address

Post Date:01/14/2025 3:08 pm

“The Governor’s State of the State address today shows a commitment to economic vitality, public safety, and affordability in Albany County, the Capital Region and across New York.

The City of Albany is the heart of our County. If it falters, the ripple effects will be felt throughout the surrounding area. The $400 million of investments into the Downtown area, including $200 million proposed for economic development, $35 million for the next phase of the 787 redevelopment and $150 million dedicated to the New York State Museum represents a new chapter for the Capital City. The commitment of $1 million towards the ‘Albany Public Safety Surge’ will go a long way towards addressing crime in our neighborhoods.

Albany County has been supporting these kinds of efforts, making investments into the redevelopment of several critical properties throughout the city, including the Central Warehouse, the former South End Grocery Store, and the former campus of The College of Saint Rose, which will soon be transformed into a new hub of economic activity.

The Governor laid out a vision for a number of other important causes that will bolster Albany County programs and services. I applaud her plan to make substantial investments in support for victims of sexual and domestic violence, doubling the funding for both rape crisis centers and child advocacy centers. Additionally, the Governor’s current proposal to broaden the standards for involuntary hospital commitment as well as broaden the ability for judges to require participation in outpatient services will provide additional tools to get individuals the help they need in times of crisis. Finally, in addition to direct cash assistance, the Governor is launching a new baby box program that will give mothers health care information and vital supplies like baby formula and diapers.

I thank Governor Hochul for her leadership and support through these initiatives. Our future is bright, and together, we can help Albany reach its full potential.”
