Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy announced that the Advance Albany County Alliance has officially closed on the purchase of the Central Warehouse property from CW Skyway an LLC owned by Redburn Development Partners. This is a significant milestone in Albany County’s plans to demolish the existing structure in order to transform the area into a community resource.
In October of 2024, a Request for Proposal (RFP) was issued for the demolition of the Central Warehouse building. Of the seven responses received, the scoring committee has narrowed it down to three applicants. It is anticipated that a contractor will be selected in the next week or so. Asbestos abatement is anticipated to begin in the spring/summer of this year with demolition to follow directly after.
“This purchase marks the beginning of the end for Central Warehouse. The building has not just been an eyesore but a safety hazard and symbol of neglect in our community. That is why Albany County has taken decisive steps to acquire the property and move forward with its demolition. This prime property has so much untapped potential, and I look forward to leading it’s revitalization,” said Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy
“I thank County Executive McCoy for his leadership and singular vision when it comes to the Central Warehouse. This demolition is not just about removing an eyesore, it’s about creating opportunities for new development and investment which are critical to the long-term economic health of our County,” said Advance Albany County Alliance CEO Kevin O’Connor
Thanks to the support of Governor Hochul and our state partners, Albany County was awarded $10 million of funding through the Empire State Development Restore NY program. This is in addition to the $3 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds provided by Albany County for the project.
Albany County is committed to coordinating with neighboring businesses, including the railroad, to coordinate demolition activities in order to minimize and prevent any operational disruptions. It is estimated that the project will take nine to twelve months to complete.
