Albany County District Attorney Lee C. Kindlon announced today that an Albany man is heading to state prison for having two illegal guns in his possession.
Eric Chapman, 19, was sentenced by the Honorable Andra Ackerman on two separate gun possession charges that he recently pleaded guilty to.
Chapman received six and a half years for Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree for an Oct. 5, 2023, incident when Albany Police attempted to arrest Chapman on a warrant. He fled and led them on a foot chase in the area of Clinton Avenue and Judson Street, tossing a loaded handgun in the woods that was eventually located and linked to him through DNA testing.
Ackerman also sentenced Chapman to seven and a half years for another Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree charge for an arrest on July 3, 2024, when he was carrying a loaded Glock 30 handgun and a high capacity magazine.
The two sentences will run consecutive for a total of 14 years.
Chapman is also a suspect in the murder of 18-year-old Javone Sims Jr., who was shot in the backyard of a Third Street residence on June 22, 2023. The trial is slated to start on June 27.
Assistant District Attorney and Major Crimes Bureau Chief Joseph Brucato prosecuted the case.
