Albany County District Attorney Lee C. Kindlon announced today that a 38-year-old man will be heading to state prison for nearly 20 years for causing a fatal DWI crash and possessing a gun.
Caezare Ebron, of Albany, was sentenced Monday by the Honorable Andra Ackerman to serve 12 1/2 to 25 years for pleading guilty to Aggravated Vehicular Homicide and seven years for pleading guilty to Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, with both sentences running consecutively.
On Nov. 18, 2022, Ebron sped off after Albany Police officers found him asleep behind the wheel at the intersection of Central and North Lake avenues. He topped speeds of 80 mph as he tried to outrun police, blowing through a stop sign at the intersection of Bradford and Ontario streets and striking a car.
Kyreem Softleigh, 26, a passenger in that car, was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
Ebron was high on marijuana and drunk at the time of the crash with a blood alcohol level of .18. He was also out on bail and awaiting sentencing for a weapons charge when the crash occurred.
Ebron chose not to speak before sentencing even though Ackerman provided him an opportunity. He will also face five years of post-supervision upon his release.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Collin D’Arcy, Bureau Chief of the Vehicular Crimes Unit, and Assistant District Attorney Marissa Olsen.
