Discusses Updated Phase 3 Industries and Parks and Recreation Guidance
Post Date:06/09/2020 12:32 pm
Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy announced today that as of this morning, there has been 1,805 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 in Albany County to date, an increase of 6 since yesterday. Additionally, there are now 542 people under mandatory quarantine and 6 people under precautionary quarantine. The five-day average for new daily positives is now 6.6. So far, 5,000 individuals have completed quarantine, with 1,526 of them having tested positive and recovered. The recovery rate for Albany County now stands at 84.54%.
There have been no county residents reported to have passed away since yesterday, keeping the total at 115. There are currently 14 individuals hospitalized, bringing the hospitalization rate to 0.77%, up slightly from 0.72% yesterday. There is currently one individual in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), unchanged from the day prior. During today’s briefing, the County Executive and County Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Elizabeth Whalen used the County COVID-19 Dashboard Tracker and the State Department of Health COVID-19 Tracker to analyze the latest data, especially in light of Memorial Day over two weeks ago.
“As we get closer to Phase 3 of reopening the economy next week, the data we’re seeing continues to move in the right direction. The number of new daily positives continues to slope downward and between May 24 and June 6, the percentage of those tested who are positive has dropped from 8.3% to 6.3%. While the Black community sadly continues to be disproportionately affected by the virus in terms of hospitalizations and ICU admittance, the percentage of our total deaths that are African American has dropped from 17.6% to 13% in a matter of three weeks,” said County Executive McCoy.
“This comes at an important time as we receive more guidance from the Governor’s Office on the updated list of industries reopening in Phase 3, which have been the subject of numerous calls and emails from business owners and constituents to my office, including nail and tanning salons, tattoo shops and massage therapies,” he continued.
Aside from restaurants and food services – which were previously announced – and nail salons, tattoo facilities and massage therapy, Phase 3 industries will also include personal care services like spas, cosmetology, UV and non-UV tanning, piercing facilities and waxing. For safety and health restrictions, businesses can find the State’s interim guidance here. The Governor clarified a large swath of outdoor activities that can now be open, including parks and open spaces (except playgrounds and other areas where social distance cannot be maintained), tennis, non-motorized boat use and rentals; marinas and boatyards; golf courses and driving ranges (except miniature golf); racket games; tossing games like horseshoes, bag tosses and bocce ball; and swim classes and swim instruction.
As of June 7, Albany County had tested 32,194 individuals and a total of 1,978 have tested positive, bringing the positive rate to 6.1%. The age group with the highest number of positive tests is now the 20- to 29-year-olds with 309 cases, compared to the 302 cases among the 50 to 59 age group. The 12203 zip code in Albany and Guilderland continues to lead all other county zip codes in total number of positive cases at 255, followed by 12208 in Albany with 151 confirmed positive cases.
This week’s schedule for Albany County’s walk-up mobile testing sites is below. Please note that testing is now available for essential workers and those returning to work, as well as the updated timeframes for each site. County Executive McCoy continues to highlight the testing site in Albany County at Priority 1 Urgent Care, which is now also providing antibody testing, located in Hamilton Square at 2080 Western Avenue in Guilderland. The partnership was made possible by Albany County supplying the facility with critical personal protective equipment for the staff and supplemental test kits. Testing will be reimbursed by an individual’s health insurance, and will be done by appointments only after patients come in to be screened for expanded CDC symptoms. Priority 1 is also now doing antibody testing. To schedule an appointment, you can call (518) 867-8040.
County Executive McCoy also encouraged those who are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms to register for the drive-thru community testing site at Rite Aid, 1863 Central Avenue in Colonie. Testing is free for those who are eligible based on CDC guidelines and are at least 18 years old. It’s available between 9am and 5pm, seven days a week by appointment only. Registration is now available at www.riteaid.com. Tests will be conducted from within an individual’s car with self-swab nasal tests and with the help of a pharmacist.
For those experiencing stress, anxiety or depression while confined to their homes for extended periods of time, the Albany County COVID-19 Mental Health Support Line is available seven days a week from 8am to 8pm at (518) 269-6634. Anyone experiencing a psychiatric emergency should still call the Albany County Mobile Crisis Team at (518) 549–6500. The 24-hour sexual assault hotline number is (518) 447-7716.
