Albany County District Attorney Lee C. Kindlon announced today that the 29-year-old man who shot at Albany Police this past December has been formally charged for that shooting as well as a separate shooting in the city weeks before.
Devante Wadjas was arraigned on a six-count indictment in front of the Honorable Andra Ackerman Wednesday charging him with two counts of Attempted Murder in the First Degree, Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree.
On Dec. 18, 2025, at around 1:13 p.m., two Albany Police officers attempted to detain Wadjas near 69 Trinity Place in relation to multiple felony investigations. Wadjas fled from police on foot and fired four shots from a Taurus .40-caliber handgun at the officers, who then returned fire and struck Wadjas.
He was arrested, treated on scene and transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Police found that the gun was equipped with an extended magazine capable of holding 15 rounds.
Albany Police had been looking for Wadjas in connection with a shots-fired incident that took place at Flava’s Lounge on Nov. 30, 2025, at 3:54 a.m., when he is alleged to have attempted to cause the death of another individual with a firearm.
Wadjas was also under investigation for several incidents in which he threatened a female and her child.
Before the arraignment Wednesday, Wadjas refused to leave his jail cell and Judge Ackerman singed a court order forcing him to be produced. More than 50 Albany Police officers filled the courtroom during the arraignment.
He pleaded not guilty and was remanded to the custody of the Albany County Correctional Facility.
Assistant District Attorney Joseph Brucato, Bureau Chief of the Major Crimes Unit, is prosecuting the case.
