The Helderberg Escarpment area has long been revered as Albany County’s signature landform, providing spectacular scenery both of and from the Escarpment.

These views are valued locally as well as by the hundreds of thousands of visitors annually to John Boyd Thacher State Park and surrounding areas of the county.

Given the shared appreciation and concern for the Helderberg Escarpment area identified at a local conference, the Helderberg Escarpment Planning Committee was formed in 1991.

The Committee worked over 10 years to complete the Helderberg Escarpment Planning Guide.

The Planning Guide was written to encourage appropriate land use and development in the Escarpment region that protects the unique scenic and natural resources of the area. It provides a reference for municipal boards, residents, and developers and also offers recommendations to assist communities in protecting these resources through local planning and zoning measures.
