There has been a treasurer or similar officer in the Albany area for a few centuries, though not every iteration has had the same duties, title, or path to the office.

The County Treasurer was appointed by the County Supervisor from 1777 to 1848, when the position became an elected office.

The County Treasurer was responsible for all trust, agency, and county funds, in addition to license fees, highway and school funds, armory funds, personal and commercial taxes, county-wide taxes, the tax sale process, and more (Paul S. Jacobson, Administration of a Typical N.Y. County, State University of Iowa Ms. Dissertation).

Within the recorded minutes of the Albany County Legislature (formerly the Board of Supervisors) held here at the Hall of Records, the Albany County Treasurer is last mentioned in 1975 with the Division of Finance appearing first in 1976 following the adoption of a revised charter that year.
