An Ignition Interlock Device (IID) prevents a car's engine from starting if the driver has alcohol on their breath.

An IID is commonly mandated by the court after a Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) conviction.

  • The IID is a small, handheld breathalyzer unit connected to the ignition of a motor vehicle.
  • The driver must use the IID before starting the vehicle.
  • If a sample shows a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) above a set limit, the car will not start.
  • The IID also requires random samples throughout the driving period.

The Probation Department monitors people with DWI convictions sentenced to either a conditional discharge or probation supervision.

  • Drivers mandated to the IID program receive a list approved vendors.
  • Vendors determine the cost for installing and maintaining the IID.
  • Payment is the responsibility of the driver participating in the program.

If you would like more information about the Interlock Program call (518) 487-5200 or email Probation@AlbanyCountyNY.gov.

When using an ignition interlock device,
drivers with a history of DWI are 4X less likely to have a car accident
…and their odds of re-offending are reduced by 90%.
