Juvenile Community Accountability Board
Benefits
- Focus is on juvenile accountability instead of Family Court.
- Juveniles learn the impact that their crime has had on the community.
- Juveniles have the opportunity to fix the harm that was caused.
- Meetings are run by trained community members.
- Parents and the victims may also attend.
- Board members all have a vested interest in the community.
The JCAB Process
- Each Juvenile meets with the Board to discuss what happened, who was harmed, and how that harm can be repaired.
- An agreement is made with the juvenile to complete a set of activities or programs designed to repair the harm.
- Upon completion of all requirements, the juvenile meets with the board to close out their case.
Impact
- Allows the community to participate in resolving problems of crime in their neighborhood.
- Provides juveniles with positive role models and shows juveniles that there are adults in the community who care about them and what they do.
- Juveniles understand the impact their actions have on their community.
- Juveniles gain an increased sense of accomplishment and self-esteem by completing the program and serving their communities.
Become a JCAB Volunteer!
- Must be at least 18 years of age and live, work or have a vested interest in the community.
- Must attend a one-day training.
- In the interest of safety, all applicants will be subject to a criminal history background check.
Note: Prior arrests do not prevent involvement. Those with outstanding warrants, open criminal cases or a history of crimes against children will not be eligible to serve. - Prior experience is not required. Applicants should want to work with young people, and have good communication and interpersonal skills. Applicants also should work well with others, and be able to maintain impartiality and confidentiality.
