The Albany County District Attorney's Crime Victims Unit supports victims in Albany County by helping with:

  • Navigating the criminal justice system, victim impact statements, court appearances, and communication with law enforcement.
  • Referrals to local agencies for assistance with mental, emotional and financial assistance.
  • Applying for compensation from the New York State Crime Victims Board for expenses such as lost income, medical bills, funeral costs, and property damage.
  • Referrals to community resources, such as counseling, DSS and domestic violence agencies.
  • Information about your role in the criminal justice system and stages of the process.
  • Security measures to protect your safety.
  • The return of stolen personal property.
  • Court dates, case information and court accompaniment during all relevant court appearances.
  • Resolving financial and employment issues resulting from victimization.
  • Preparing a Victim Impact Statement, speaking at sentencing and receiving notifications regarding parole or release.

  • Helps provide compensation to innocent victims of crime in a timely, efficient and compassionate manner;
  • Helps fund direct services to crime victims via a network of community-based programs; and
  • Helps to advocate for the rights and benefits of all innocent victims of crime.
