Restorative Justice
District Attorney Lee C. Kindlon established the Restorative Justice Bureau to tackle some of society's most pressing issues, including youth crime, drug addiction, and mental health treatment. This bureau was established and dedicated to diverting people away from the criminal justice system. A criminal conviction is not necessarily the most effective way to address a problem. This bureau aims to create alternatives to incarceration through various practical and pragmatic approaches.
The Bureau includes oversight of our treatment courts such as Drug Court, including a Veterans Court and Alternative Treatment Court. These Courts deal with substance abuse, poverty, mental illness and homelessness.
The Office also has two diversion boards – Felony Youth Diversion Program and the Community Partnership Group – made up of community members and supervised closely by ADAs.
These programs are run out of the Community Justice Outreach Center that meets regularly with those participants in both programs, monitoring their progress and assisting them to change the trajectory of their lives.
The DA's Office is also a full participant and stakeholder in the Albany and Cohoes/Watervliet Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) programs.
